Crochet summer baby dress

I cannot believe that in couple of weeks Alina will be one year old! It seems just yesterday we brought her home-fragile little creature-and today she is almost walking and “talking”! So I started making some projects for this occasion, and one of them is the dress that I finally finished.

It is super easy to make and it can be adjusted to any size with no problem.

Here is how I made it:

Abbreviations:
Ch- chain
dc- double crochet
st-stitch
sc-single crochet

I used cotton yarn and 1/2.75mm hook.

Make as manychains as you need, so that baby's head will easely go through the opening.

When you have enough chains, join and start Row 1.

Round 1: Ch 2, dc in every st till the end, join.

Round 2: Ch 5, skip one dc and make dc in next st, *ch2, skip dc and make dc in the next st* repeat till the end of the Row and join.

Round 3: Ch2, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in the 5th st(making increases in every 5th st), repeat till the end and join.

Round 4: same as Row 2.

Round 5: Ch 2, dc in the next 5 sts, 2 dc in the 6th st (making increases in every 6th  st), repeat till the end, join.
Round 6: same as Row 4 and Row 2.
Round 7: Ch 2, dc in the next 6 st, 2 dc in the 7th st (making increases in every 7th st), repeat till the end, join.

  Round 8: same as Round 2, 4 and 6.
Now at this point I took stitch marker ( safety pin will also work) and joined together stitches from front and back, leaving  holes for arms on both sides.

And from now on you will be working only on the main part of the dress.

Round 9: Ch 2,dc in every st till the end, join.

Round 10: same as Round 8.
Now the fun part begins- at this point you can choose any any pattern you want, whatever you like!
I continued this way:
Round 11: Ch 5, skip one arch, sc in the next one, repeat till the end.
I used this diagram for the next 6 Rounds:

Round 12-16: Ch 5, sc in next arch, repeat till the end.
Round 17: *Dc in next arch, ch 5, dc in the same arch, dc in the next arch, ch 5, dc in the same arch*
Round 18: 6 dc in each ch5 space, repeat till the end.

Then I just repeat Round 17 and 18 twice, and repeat steps from Round 11 and 12-16. Finally it looks like this:

It is so light and breathable, just perfect for summer!

Still working on diaper cover))))

I hope it all makes sense, and I would be happy to answer all questions!

xoxo,

Tanya

  2. Thank you so much for this pattern, it's exactly what I was looking for to cover my daughter's christening gown (which my mom had made from her wedding dress when I was born) to hide the wear and one stain!!!! And obviously, she'll be able to wear it this summer too!! THANKS!

  4. Hi Tanya! I am currently working this pattern and am stuck at row 17. My row 17 isn't looking like yours. :( I seem to be having trouble with the sc part. Where are you sc'ing? In the same arc as the dc's? Or in the sc from the previous row? Thank you so much for the help. So far the dress is turning out beautifully!

    1. Hi Susan,

Looks like it was my mistake, I don't know where this sc came from:( Sorry! And than you so much for bringing this up to me! :) So work Round 17 this way: "Dc in next arch, ch 5, dc in the same arch, dc in the next arch, ch 5, dc in the same arch* "

  5. Hi I was just wondering what weight of yarn you used? It looks like a very thin yarn but I can't tell, pattern is beautiful though!

    1. I used thread weight, Aunt Lydia's cotton yarn. I believe it was size 10 ;)

    2. Thank you! Do you remember how much you used by chance? :)

  6. Hi there, this dress is beautiful. I am following your pattern but it seems that my collar is more ruffly than in your pictures. Is this something I should be concerned about or will it work itself out as I continue the dress? Thank you.

    1. Hi! I think it shouldn't be ruffly ;) my guess is that maybe you've made too many increases in the 3rd Round. I hope it will work out for you! :)

    2. I followed the pattern exactly. I think what's wrong is my foundation chain is too long and I have too many stitches in it per inch. I made a 19 inch chain (circumference of a 12 month head)and 111 double crochet stitches in the first round. It's apparently too big for my 5 year old! So I will shorten the chain and change the even rows to dc 1 ch 1 instead of dc 2 ch 2. If you could let me know how many stitches you had that might help. Thanks!

    3. I wish I could remember, I made this dress about a year ago, and can't tell you exactly how many stitches I made. Sorry :(

    4. Hi! I made a 24 month size and mine was ruffly at first too! once I kept going though it smoothed out with the armholes and everything :) Seems maybe just because it was a bigger size :)

    5. Mine is ruffly too, pls let me know how it turned out, I'm making for my one year old.

  15. Hi, thank you for sharing, I m new to crochet, just wondering why you chain 2 to start round 1 instead of chain 3? Is it what we call half double crochet here?

    1. hi Susan! I really don't remember why I chose to do ch2 instead of ch3. I made this dress a long time ago:) But I think it is not a big deal if you like to make ch3. I am sure there will be no problem at all! :)

    2. Chain 3 works better for back and forth rows of double crochet, but when you work in the round, chain 2 seems to work better. But really you can do whatever looks best to you. Hope that helps!
